Combining alcohol with paracetamol increases the risk of serious liver damage. Even small amounts of alcohol can make the liver more vulnerable to the toxic by-products of paracetamol.

Why this happens
The liver breaks down both alcohol and paracetamol. Alcohol causes the liver to produce more of a toxic substance when processing paracetamol. At the same time, alcohol uses up 'glutathione', a protective chemical the liver needs to neutralise that toxin.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking paracetamol. Never exceed the maximum recommended dose of paracetamol (usually 4g or eight 500mg tablets in 24 hours), and if you are a regular heavy drinker, you should speak to your doctor before taking paracetamol at all.
