Taking zopiclone and alprazolam together can cause extreme sleepiness, severe drowsiness, and a high risk of breathing difficulties. It can also lead to significant confusion, loss of coordination (increasing the risk of falls), and may cause you to stop breathing entirely (respiratory depression).

Why this happens
Both medicines are 'central nervous system depressants'. They work by slowing down brain activity to help with sleep or anxiety. When used together, their effects are added together (an additive effect), which can slow down the brain and body to a dangerous level.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should not take these two medicines together unless specifically instructed and closely monitored by your doctor. If you are prescribed both, do not drive or operate machinery. Seek emergency medical help immediately if you experience extreme dizziness, shallow breathing, or if you find it very difficult to stay awake.
