Can I take 50 and Curcumin together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) alongside 5-HTP may increase the levels of serotonin in your brain too much. This can lead to a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms can include shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures.

Why this happens

Both 5-HTP and curcumin increase the amount of serotonin (a chemical messenger) in the brain. 5-HTP is a direct building block for serotonin, while curcumin acts like a mild natural antidepressant by preventing the breakdown of serotonin. When used together, they can create an 'additive effect', leading to dangerously high serotonin levels.

You should use caution when combining these two supplements. It is best to speak with your doctor or a pharmacist before taking them together, especially if you are already taking prescribed antidepressants (like SSRIs). If you decide to take both, start with low doses and stop immediately if you feel agitated, confused, or develop a rapid heartbeat.
