Taking 5-HTP and venlafaxine together can lead to a very serious condition called 'serotonin syndrome'. This happens when there is too much of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. Symptoms can include feeling very agitated, confused, or sweaty, as well as having a fast heartbeat, muscle twitching, shivering, or diarrhoea. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening.

Why this happens
Both venlafaxine and 5-HTP increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. Venlafaxine stops the brain from reabsorbing serotonin, while 5-HTP is a building block that the body uses to make more serotonin. Using them at the same time can cause serotonin levels to rise to dangerous levels.
What you should do
