Taking calcium (in Adcal-D3) and magnesium together can cause them to compete for absorption in your body. This means you might not get the full benefit of either supplement. Additionally, taking high doses of both can occasionally lead to an upset stomach or a laxative effect.

Why this happens
Calcium and magnesium use the same 'pathways' to be absorbed from your gut into your bloodstream. If taken at the exact same time in large amounts, they can crowd each other out. Furthermore, both minerals can draw water into the bowel, which may cause loose stools.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to space these supplements out. Try to take your Adcal-D3 and your magnesium glycinate at least 2 hours apart to ensure your body absorbs as much of each mineral as possible. If you experience any diarrhoea or stomach cramping, speak with your pharmacist about adjusting the timing or dose.

However, both substances can have a mild effect on how your blood clots.
