Can I take Amitriptyline and Cbd oil together?

Combining amitriptyline and CBD oil can lead to increased side effects such as extreme drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and dry mouth. It may also cause the levels of amitriptyline in your blood to rise higher than intended, which can increase the risk of heart rhythm problems.

Why this happens

CBD can slow down the liver enzymes (specifically CYP2C19 and CYP3A4) that your body uses to break down amitriptyline. This causes the medicine to stay in your system longer. Additionally, both substances have a 'sedating' effect on the brain, meaning they can double up on making you feel sleepy or uncoordinated.

You should speak to your GP or pharmacist before using CBD oil with amitriptyline. If you decide to use them together, start with a very low dose of CBD and monitor yourself closely for increased side effects. Seek medical advice if you feel unusually drowsy, confused, or notice a fast or irregular heartbeat.
