Amitriptyline can cause constipation as a side effect. Docusate is a stool softener used to treat constipation. There is no harmful interaction between these two medicines; in fact, docusate is often used to manage the side effects caused by amitriptyline.

Why this happens
Amitriptyline has 'anticholinergic' effects, which means it slows down the movement of the digestive system, leading to hard stools. Docusate works by allowing water and fats to enter the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. They work in opposite ways on the bowel but do not interfere with how the other is absorbed or processed by the body.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is safe to take these medicines together. If you are taking amitriptyline and find you are frequently constipated, ensure you also drink plenty of water and eat high-fibre foods. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor if the constipation does not improve with docusate.
