Metoprolol (a beta-blocker) and Anoro Ellipta (which contains vilanterol, a beta-agonist) work in opposite ways on the airways. Taking them together can make your inhaler less effective at opening your airways and may cause breathing difficulties or asthma-like symptoms. Additionally, metoprolol may lose some of its effectiveness in lowering blood pressure or controlling heart rate.

Why this happens
Anoro Ellipta contains vilanterol, which stimulates 'beta-2' receptors to relax the muscles in the lungs. Metoprolol is a beta-blocker that blocks these same receptors. Because they compete for the same spots in the body, they effectively cancel each other out. Even though metoprolol is 'cardioselective' (targeting the heart), it can still affect the lungs, especially at higher doses.
