Can I take Aspirin and Levothyroxine together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking high doses of aspirin may temporarily increase the amount of thyroid hormone active in your blood. This could potentially lead to symptoms of an overactive thyroid, such as a racing heart, feeling shaky, or heat intolerance. However, for most people taking standard low-dose aspirin (75mg) for heart protection or occasional pain relief, this is unlikely to cause a noticeable problem.

Why this happens

Levothyroxine travels through your bloodstream mostly attached to proteins. Aspirin can 'bump' the levothyroxine off these proteins, leaving more 'free' or active hormone in your system. This can temporarily change your thyroid hormone levels.

You can usually take these together, but it is best to avoid taking very high doses of aspirin (over 2g per day) regularly. If you are starting a new daily aspirin routine, inform your doctor so they can monitor your thyroid levels if necessary. If you feel symptoms of an overactive thyroid (like palpitations or anxiety), speak to your GP.
