Can I take Asprin and Turmeric together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking aspirin and turmeric together can increase your risk of bruising or bleeding. This might include nosebleeds, bleeding gums when you brush your teeth, or bleeding that takes longer than usual to stop if you cut yourself. In more serious cases, it could lead to internal bleeding, such as in the stomach.

Why this happens

Both aspirin and turmeric have 'blood-thinning' properties. Aspirin works by stopping blood cells (platelets) from sticking together to form clots. Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which also has natural anti-clotting effects. When used together, these effects add up, making your blood much less likely to clot.

You should use caution when combining these two. If you are taking aspirin on a doctor's prescription (for example, to prevent a heart attack or stroke), speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting a turmeric supplement. Watch out for signs of unusual bleeding, such as dark, tarry stools, coughing up blood, or large unexplained bruises. If you have an upcoming surgery, you should stop taking turmeric supplements at least two weeks beforehand.
