Can I take Berberine and Folic acid together?

Berberine may lower the levels of folic acid (Vitamin B9) in your body, potentially leading to a deficiency if taken together over a long period.

Why this happens

Berberine can interfere with the enzymes and transport systems that your body uses to absorb and process folic acid. It may also inhibit an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which is needed to turn folic acid into its active form.

If you are taking both, consider spacing them out by at least 2 hours. It is a good idea to have your folate levels checked by a GP, especially if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as folic acid is vital for foetal development. You may need a higher dose of folic acid or a methylated form (5-MTHF) that is easier for the body to use.
