Taking these two medicines together can cause your blood pressure to drop lower than if you took either one alone. While this is often the intended effect to treat high blood pressure, it can sometimes make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when standing up quickly. There is also a small risk that the combination could affect your blood sugar levels or certain salts (electrolytes) in your blood.

Why this happens
Both medicines work to lower blood pressure but in different ways. Bisoprolol is a beta-blocker that slows the heart rate, while hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water tablet) that helps the body get rid of excess salt and water. Because they both lower blood pressure, their effects add together.
