Why this happens

Docusate is a 'surfactant' or stool softener. It works by allowing water and fats to enter the stool. However, this same action can also increase the absorption of other drugs in the gut. If more warfarin is absorbed into the bloodstream, it can lead to an increased 'INR' (a measure of how long it takes your blood to clot).

While this interaction is generally considered minor, you should monitor for signs of unusual bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark, tarry stools. If you are starting docusate for the first time while on warfarin, it is a good idea to inform your doctor or pharmacist so they can decide if your blood clotting levels (INR) need extra monitoring.
