Can I take Ibuprofen and Iron supplements together?

Taking ibuprofen and iron supplements together can increase the risk of irritation or damage to the lining of your stomach and intestines. Both substances can be harsh on the digestive system individually; when combined, they may increase the likelihood of developing stomach aches, indigestion, or in more serious cases, stomach ulcers.

Why this happens

Ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines called NSAIDs, which reduce the protective mucus lining of the stomach. Iron supplements are known to be directly irritating to the stomach lining (the gastrointestinal mucosa). When the stomach's natural protection is lowered by ibuprofen, it becomes more vulnerable to the irritating effects of the iron.

It is generally best to take these at different times of the day to minimise stomach upset. Always take both ibuprofen and iron supplements with food or a large glass of water to protect your stomach. If you notice persistent stomach pain, black or tarry stools, or indigestion, stop taking them and speak to your doctor.
