Why this happens

Selenium is a mineral that helps the body convert levothyroxine (T4) into its active form (T3). If you start taking selenium, your body might become more efficient at using the thyroid medication, which could potentially change the amount of medicine you need. Additionally, taking supplements at the exact same time as your medication can sometimes interfere with how well the pill is absorbed in your stomach.

You should leave a gap of at least 2 to 4 hours between taking your levothyroxine and any supplements containing selenium. If you decide to start taking selenium regularly, inform your doctor or pharmacist. They may want to monitor your thyroid levels (TSH) more closely to ensure your dose of levothyroxine remains correct for you.
