Why this happens
Vitamin D and bupropion are processed by different pathways in the body. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin primarily processed by the liver and kidneys to its active form, while bupropion is metabolised mainly by the CYP2B6 enzyme system. They do not interfere with each other's absorption, breakdown, or effectiveness.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou can continue taking both as prescribed. As with any supplement, it is best to take vitamin D with a meal containing some fat to help with absorption. If you experience any unusual symptoms, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Important precautions
Back to contentsMental health disorders
Wellbutrin can cause some people to have suicidal thoughts or a risk of self-harm, especially when first starting or when the dose is changed. Seek medical help immediately if your mood worsens or you have thoughts of hurting yourself.
Seizure disorders (epilepsy) or eating disorders
Wellbutrin carries a significant risk of causing seizures. You must not take it if you have a history of epilepsy, or if you have ever had an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia, as the risk of seizures is much higher.
Alcohol or sedative withdrawal
Suddenly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives while taking Wellbutrin can significantly increase your risk of having a seizure.
Hypercalcaemia (high blood calcium)
Do not take vitamin D if you have high levels of calcium in your blood or urine, as it can lead to serious kidney damage and heart rhythm problems.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsAlcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking Wellbutrin. Combining alcohol with this medication can significantly increase your risk of having a seizure. Additionally, Wellbutrin may lower your tolerance to alcohol, making you feel more intoxicated or increasing the risk of neuropsychiatric side effects like anxiety or confusion. If you are a heavy drinker, do not stop drinking suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can also trigger seizures.
Caffeine
Wellbutrin can have a stimulating effect. Consuming high amounts of caffeine (found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and cola) may increase side effects such as restlessness, anxiety, tremors, or difficulty sleeping. It is advisable to monitor your caffeine intake.
High-fat meals
If you are taking the sustained-release (SR) or extended-release (XL) versions of Wellbutrin, avoid taking them with a very high-fat meal. High fat intake can sometimes cause the medication to be released into your system too quickly, which may increase the risk of side effects, including seizures.
High-fat foods
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is best absorbed when taken with a meal that contains some fat (such as avocado, nuts, or dairy), though this is a recommendation for effectiveness rather than a safety warning.
