Domperidone is used to relieve feelings of sickness (nausea) or being sick (vomiting). Feeling sick can be a common symptom, but it may be due to a number of different causes. You will only be recommended an anti-emetic like domperidone if the cause of your sickness is known.

Domperidone works by helping to move the food in your stomach through your digestive system more quickly. This helps to stop you from feeling sick.

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking domperidone it is important that your doctor knows:

  • Si vous êtes enceinte, essayez d'avoir un bébé ou allaitez.

  • If it is for a child under 12 years of age.

  • Si vous avez des problèmes avec votre foie ou vos reins.

  • If you have problems with your heart or if you have been told you have an irregular heart rhythm.

  • If you know you have any problems with your digestive system, such as a blockage or any internal bleeding.

  • If you have a tumour on your pituitary gland, known as a prolactinoma.

  • Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about domperidone and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.

  • Take domperidone exactly as your doctor tells you to. The dose for adults and for young people aged 12 years or over is 10 mg (one tablet) up to three times a day. Do not take more than three doses in any 24-hour period.

  • Take your doses about half an hour before meals. If you take domperidone after a meal, it will still work, but it may take longer to have an effect.

  • Domperidone should be taken for a short period of time only. Your treatment will last no longer than seven days.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with domperidone. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
