Eel With Olives, Chillies, and Capers (Anguilla Livernese)

This traditional Italian seafood dish, known as Anguilla alla Livornese, is a celebration of bold Mediterranean flavours. The richness of the eel is beautifully balanced by the acidity of dry red wine and the salty punch of Gaeta olives and caper berries. It is a fantastic choice for those seeking a dairy-free main course that offers a deep, savoury profile and a hint of warmth from the dried red pepper flakes.

Eel is a highly prized ingredient in many coastal regions, valued for its firm texture and unique flavour. In this recipe, the fish is gently poached in the oven within a vibrant tomato sauce, ensuring it stays succulent and tender. Best served with crusty bread or polenta to soak up any remaining juices, it makes for a sophisticated yet simple supper.
