Crispy Chicken Wings

These crispy chicken wings offer a wonderful balance of heat and aromatic flavour, making them a sophisticated choice for a light supper or a shared platter. By using a light dusting of cornflour and roasting at a high temperature, you achieve a satisfyingly crunchy skin without the need for deep-fat frying. The addition of Chinese five-spice provides a warm, savoury depth that perfectly complements the kick of dried chilli flakes.

As a diabetes-friendly option, this recipe focuses on high protein and controlled fats, using a small amount of vegetable oil to crisp the skin. Serving these wings with fresh chillies and a sharp, pickled garnish adds brightness and texture without unnecessary sugars. Pair them with a crisp green salad or steamed tenderstem broccoli for a balanced, heart-healthy meal that does not compromise on taste.

Ingredients for Crispy Chicken Wings

  • 1.0kg chicken wings

  • 60ml cornflour

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 tablespoon sea salt

  • 1/2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder

  • 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes

  • Hot chilli sauce, pickled chilli, thinly sliced fresh chilli and chilli mayonnaise (optional), to serve

How to make Crispy Chicken Wings

Preheat oven 218°C. Using kitchen scissors, trim the tips from the wings and discard. Cut the wings in half at the joint and place in a plastic bag with the cornflour. Shake to coat, dusting off any excess cornflour.

Place the oil, salt, five-spice and dried chilli flakes in a large bowl. Add the wings and toss to coat. Place on a baking sheet lined with non-stick parchment paper and roast for 25–30 minutes or until crisp. Serve with chilli sauce, chilies and chilli mayonnaise.
