These wasabi and spring onion mashed potatoes offer a vibrant, contemporary twist on a classic British side dish. By swapping traditional mustard for pungent wasabi and incorporating nutty sesame oil, this recipe transforms the humble potato into something truly fragrant. The golden Yukon Gold potatoes provide a buttery foundation that carries the heat of the horseradish beautifully, while the sautéed spring onions add a fresh, savoury depth of flavour.
This vegetarian dish is an excellent accompaniment to grilled fish, glazed salmon, or even a roasted chicken. It works particularly well for dinner parties as it can be prepared up to two hours in advance and reheated just before serving. Whether you are looking for a comforting bowl of mash or a sophisticated side with a hint of spice, this recipe is a versatile addition to your repertoire.

2 tablespoons wasabi paste (horseradish paste)*

How to make Wasabi and spring onion Mashed Potatoes

Heat oil in small skillet over medium heat; add spring onions and sauté until wilted, about 3 minutes. Set aside. Using potato masher in same large pot or ricer, mash potatoes. Stir in hot cream mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in spring onions. DO AHEAD: Can be made 2 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature. Rewarm in microwave, stirring occasionally.
