There are no known harmful interactions between reishi mushrooms and white button mushrooms. Both are edible fungi that are commonly consumed together in food or as part of a supplement routine.
Why this happens
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) and white button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) do not interfere with each other's absorption or breakdown in the body. They have different biological profiles; reishi is primarily used for its potential immune-modulating properties, while white button mushrooms are a standard culinary food source.
What you should do
It is safe to consume these together. However, if you are taking reishi as a concentrated supplement, you should inform your doctor if you are also taking blood-thinning medications or blood pressure treatments, as reishi can sometimes have a mild additive effect on those specific types of medicines.
Important precautions
Bleeding disorders or surgery
Reishi may increase the risk of bleeding. You must stop taking it at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery and use it with caution if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medication.
Low blood pressure (Hypotension)
Reishi may lower blood pressure. If you already have low blood pressure or take medication to control high blood pressure, they could cause your blood pressure to drop too low.
Diabetes
These supplements can lower blood sugar levels. If you are taking insulin or other diabetes medications, monitor your blood sugar closely as your dose may need adjustment to prevent hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar).
Auto-immune conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
These supplements can increase immune system activity, which may worsen the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. Avoid use if you have these conditions.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking reishi. Both substances are processed by the liver, and combining them may increase the risk of liver strain or damage. Additionally, reishi can have a sedative effect which alcohol may intensify.
Caffeine
Reishi is often used for its calming effects, while caffeine is a stimulant. Consuming high amounts of caffeine may counteract the intended relaxing effects of the supplement.
