Can I take Cod liver oil and Garlic supplements together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking cod liver oil and garlic supplements together may increase your risk of bruising or bleeding. This is because both supplements have 'blood-thinning' properties. While the risk is generally low for healthy people, it becomes more significant if you are already taking prescription blood thinners or are planning to have surgery.

Why this happens

Both cod liver oil (which contains omega-3 fatty acids) and garlic have antiplatelet effects. This means they both make the 'sticky' cells in your blood (platelets) less likely to clump together to form clots. When used together, this effect is added together, making it harder for your blood to clot if you get a cut or injury.

What you should do

For most people, taking these together in standard doses is fine, but you should watch for signs of easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums. If you are scheduled for surgery or dental work, you should stop taking both supplements at least two weeks beforehand. If you are already taking prescription blood-thinning medication (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel), speak to your doctor before combining these supplements.
