Can I take Atorvastatin and Cardioace together?

Drug interaction guide

Cardioace contains several ingredients, including Garlic extract and Omega-3 fatty acids. When taken with atorvastatin, there is a small possibility of an increased risk of muscle-related side effects or changes in how the liver processes the medication. Additionally, the Garlic in Cardioace may slightly increase the risk of bruising or bleeding if you are also taking blood-thinning medications alongside your statin.

Why this happens

Some components in herbal supplements like Garlic can interfere with the liver enzymes (specifically CYP3A4) that break down atorvastatin, potentially leading to slightly higher levels of the drug in your blood. Omega-3s and atorvastatin both have effects on blood vessels and cholesterol, which is usually beneficial but requires monitoring.

What you should do

It is generally safe to take these together, but you should inform your doctor or pharmacist. Watch out for any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (especially if you also have a fever). If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor. It is also wise to have your regular liver function blood tests as scheduled by your GP.

Important precautions

Grossesse

You must not take atorvastatin if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as it may harm the developing baby. Use effective contraception while taking this medicine.

Unexplained muscle pain

You must contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. In rare cases, this can lead to serious kidney problems.

Grapefruit juice consumption

Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. Grapefruit contains compounds that can significantly increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood, increasing the risk of serious side effects.

Food and drink warnings

Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice contains compounds that can increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood. This can increase your risk of side effects, such as muscle pain or damage. Avoid drinking large quantities (more than 1.2 litres daily), though it is safest to avoid it altogether while taking this medicine.

Alcool

While there is no direct interaction, drinking large amounts of alcohol regularly can increase the risk of liver problems when taking a statin. It is best to stay within the recommended weekly limits.

Foods high in Vitamin K (e.g. spinach, kale, broccoli)

Cardioace contains Vitamin K. If you are taking blood-thinning medication like warfarin, sudden changes in your intake of Vitamin K (from supplements or food) can interfere with how your medicine works. Consult your doctor before starting this supplement if you are on anticoagulants.
