Taking atorvastatin and prednisolone together may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects, such as muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. In rare cases, this can lead to a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis, where muscle tissue breaks down and can cause kidney damage. Additionally, prednisolone can raise blood sugar levels, which may slightly reduce the effectiveness of atorvastatin in managing your cholesterol profile.

Why this happens
Both medications can independently cause muscle toxicity (myopathy). When used together, these effects can add up (an additive effect). Furthermore, prednisolone is a corticosteroid that can increase glucose production and insulin resistance, potentially counteracting some of the cardiovascular benefits of the statin.
What you should do
You can usually take these medicines together, but you must be vigilant. Report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor immediately, especially if you also feel generally unwell or have dark-coloured urine. If you have diabetes, you should monitor your blood sugar levels more closely while taking prednisolone.
