Why this happens

Amlodipine can slow down the body's ability to break down atorvastatin in the liver. This leads to higher levels of the cholesterol medicine circulating in your system.

What you should do

It is generally safe to take these together, but your doctor may choose to limit your dose of Lipitor (atorvastatin) or monitor you more closely. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, contact your doctor immediately.

Important precautions

Grapefruit consumption

Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. It can significantly increase the levels of these medicines in your blood, making side effects much more likely.

Food and drink warnings

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice

Grapefruit can increase the level of these medicines in your blood, which may increase the risk of side effects. For Lipitor, avoid drinking large quantities (more than 1.2 litres daily), though it is safest to avoid it altogether.
