These peppery horseradish mashed potatoes offer a sophisticated twist on a classic vegetarian side dish. By incorporating the sharp, warming heat of horseradish into fluffy russet potatoes, you create a flavour profile that perfectly complements rich gravies and roasted vegetables. The addition of creamy whole milk and unsalted butter ensures a silky texture, while the freshly ground black pepper provides a subtle, lingering warmth that cuts through the richness.
This simple yet effective recipe is ideal for elevating a traditional Sunday roast or serving alongside a hearty mushroom pie. Because the horseradish is drained before being added, you get all the punchy aroma without making the mash too wet. It is a brilliant way to add a bit of zing to your midweek meals, providing a comforting and savoury accompaniment that the whole family will enjoy.

675g russet (baking) potatoes (3 medium), peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

How to make Peppery Horseradish Mashed Potatoes
Back to contentsPut potatoes and kosher salt in a large heavy saucepan and generously cover with cold water. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Drain well and return to saucepan.
Meanwhile, heat milk and butter in a small saucepan until butter is melted and milk is hot but not boiling. Add milk mixture, along with horseradish and pepper, to potatoes and mash with a potato masher or fork (to desired consistency). Season with salt and serve warm.
