Aussi appelé | Bactroban Nasal® Ointment |
Disponible sous forme de | Nasal Ointment |
Mupirocin nasal ointment is used to kill bacteria which can live in your nose, and which can spread to other people when you breathe or sneeze. It is used in particular to kill bacteria called meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which can cause skin infections. Although you may have MRSA in your nose and be otherwise well, MRSA is easily spread to other people. If it spreads to a person who is frail or already ill, it can be difficult to treat.
Mupirocin nasal ointment must only be used for your nose, but there is also a cream and an ointment containing mupirocin which is used to kill bacteria on the skin. See separate medicine leaflet called Mupirocine pour infections cutanées which gives more information about this.

How to use mupirocin nasal ointment
Retour au sommaireBefore you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the nasal ointment.
Wash your hands before you use the ointment. Use your little finger or a cotton wool bud to apply a small amount of ointment (about the size of a match head) to the inside of each nostril. Press the sides of your nose together for a short while to allow the ointment to spread around the inside of your nostrils. Use it in this way two or three times a day for five days. It is likely that you will be tested a day or so after you have finished using the ointment, to make sure it has worked. If there are still some bacteria remaining in your nose, you will be asked to repeat the treatment.
For mupirocin to work properly it should be applied regularly during the course of treatment. If you forget to use it at your usual time, apply it as soon as you remember and then go on as before.
If you are due to have an operation or any dental treatment, please tell the person carrying out the treatment that you are using mupirocin nasal ointment.

Questions fréquemment posées
Why is it important to use mupirocin nasal ointment to treat bacteria like MRSA in the nose, even if I feel well?
Even if you are not experiencing illness, MRSA bacteria living in your nose can easily spread to other people. If these bacteria spread to someone who is frail or already ill, the infection can be very difficult for them to treat.
Is there a difference between mupirocin nasal ointment and mupirocin used for skin infections?
Yes, mupirocin nasal ointment is specifically for use in your nose. There are also mupirocin creams and ointments designed to kill bacteria on the skin, which are for a different purpose and have their own separate information leaflet.
How will I know if the mupirocin nasal ointment has successfully cleared the bacteria from my nose?
You will likely be tested a day or so after you complete the five-day course of treatment to confirm if the ointment has worked. If any bacteria are still present, your doctor will ask you to repeat the treatment.
What should I do if I experience mild itching or tingling after applying the mupirocin nasal ointment?
It is not uncommon to experience slight itching or tingling when you first start using mupirocin nasal ointment. This sensation usually passes quickly. If you develop a reaction that is particularly irritating or severe, you should stop using the ointment and contact your doctor for advice right away.
If I am pregnant or breastfeeding, can I still use mupirocin nasal ointment?
While mupirocin is not known to be harmful to babies, it is important to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you start using the ointment. Your doctor will make sure it is the right treatment for you.
What should I do if I accidentally swallow some of the mupirocin nasal ointment?
Mupirocin nasal ointment is only for use in the nose. If you accidentally swallow some of it, you should contact the accident and emergency department of your local hospital for advice.
