Lipids, or fats, are made naturally in your body from the food you eat. They are easily stored in your body and serve as a source of energy. Cholestérol and triglycerides are types of lipid. If the concentration of these lipids in your blood becomes too high, it leads to a condition called hyperlipidémie. If it is the concentration of cholesterol which has become too high, it is called hypercholestérolémie.

People with high lipid levels can develop small fatty patches called athérome. These patches develop when excess fat is deposited on to the walls of blood vessels. Over time, these patches can make a blood vessel narrower and this is called atherosclerosis (sometimes referred to as 'hardening of the arteries'). The narrowing reduces the blood flow through the artery and increases the risk of a number of heart and blood vessel diseases, such as crise cardiaque et AVC.

Rosuvastatin belongs to a group of medicines known as statins (or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors). It regulates the amount of cholesterol and other lipids made by your body. It does this by blocking the action of a certain enzyme (called HMG-CoA reductase) which your body needs to make the fats. This lowers your risk of heart and blood vessel disease. It can also reduce this risk, even if your cholesterol levels are normal, if you are at an increased risk of heart disease.

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking rosuvastatin it is important that your doctor knows:

  • Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about rosuvastatin and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.

  • Take rosuvastatin once each day, exactly as your doctor tells you to. You will be started on a dose of 5 mg or 10 mg daily. If you are of Asian origin or over 70 years old, you will need to take the lower 5 mg dose to start with. Some other people will also need to take this lower dose at first. Your doctor will increase your dose after four weeks of treatment if this is considered necessary. There are several strengths of tablet available, so your doctor will tell you which strength is right for you.

  • You can take rosuvastatin at a time of day to suit you. You should, however, try to take your doses at the same time of day each day. Swallow the tablet with a drink of water. You can take rosuvastatin before or after food.

  • Try to keep your regular appointments with your doctor. This is so that your doctor can check on your progress. You will need to have some blood tests from time to time. These are to measure your lipid levels and also to check that your liver has not been affected by taking rosuvastatin.

  • Women taking rosuvastatin must avoid getting pregnant. Make sure you have discussed with your doctor which types of contraception are suitable for you and your partner.

  • Some antacids can reduce the amount of rosuvastatin your body absorbs, so if possible, avoid taking indigestion remedies during the two hours before or during the two hours after you have taken rosuvastatin.

  • Treatment with rosuvastatin is usually long-term unless you experience an adverse effect. You should continue to take the tablets regularly.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains some of the most common ones associated with rosuvastatin, although these tend to be mild. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with your medicine. Unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following continue or become troublesome.

Common rosuvastatin side-effects (these affect fewer than 1 in 10 people)

Que puis-je faire si je ressens cela ?

Muscle pain or tenderness

Although this may not be anything to be concerned about, you should tell your doctor about this. This is because there is a rare but serious side-effect of rosuvastatin which is a severe form of muscle inflammation

Disturbed sleep, feeling dizzy or tired

Parlez avec votre médecin si cela pose problème

Important: rosuvastatin has been associated with some more serious side-effects in a very few people. Although these occur only rarely, it is important that you tell your doctor straightaway if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Si vous développez des crampes ou des douleurs musculaires, en particulier si elles se manifestent dans vos jambes et que vous vous sentez mal ou avez une température élevée (fièvre).

  • If you feel short of breath or develop an unexplained cough. This is because (in very rare cases) rosuvastatin can cause a disease called interstitial lung disease.

What is hyperlipidaemia and how does it relate to cholesterol?

Hyperlipidaemia is a condition where the concentration of lipids (fats) in your blood becomes too high. Cholesterol is a type of lipid, so if the concentration of cholesterol specifically becomes too high, it's called hypercholesterolaemia. While a high lipid level won't make you feel unwell, it can lead to problems like atherosclerosis if left untreated.

How does rosuvastatin help to prevent serious heart and blood vessel diseases?

Rosuvastatin works by blocking an enzyme your body needs to make fats, including cholesterol and other lipids. By regulating the amount of these fats, it helps to prevent the build-up of fatty patches called atheroma on blood vessel walls. This reduces the narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis), which in turn lowers your risk of heart attack and stroke. It can even reduce this risk if your cholesterol levels are considered normal but you are still at a higher risk of heart disease.

Are there specific times of day I should take rosuvastatin, or does it matter if I take it with food?

You can take rosuvastatin at a time of day that suits you best. The important thing is to try and take your dose at the same time each day. It can be taken either before or after food, and you should swallow the tablet with water.

What should I do if I forget to take my rosuvastatin dose?

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if you don't remember until the next day, you should skip the forgotten dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for the one you missed.

Will I need to take rosuvastatin for a long time?

Treatment with rosuvastatin is usually long-term. You should continue to take the tablets regularly as prescribed unless you experience an adverse effect that requires your doctor to change your treatment.

Can rosuvastatin interact with other medications, even those I buy without a prescription?

Yes, it can. It's important to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including those available without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines. For instance, some indigestion remedies (antacids) can reduce how much rosuvastatin your body absorbs, so you should try to avoid taking them within two hours before or two hours after your rosuvastatin dose.

What are the common side-effects of rosuvastatin and what should I do about them?

Common side-effects, affecting fewer than 1 in 10 people, include muscle pain, headache, constipation, feeling sick, tummy pain, disturbed sleep, feeling dizzy or tired. Muscle pain should be reported to your doctor as it can rarely be a sign of a more serious issue. For headaches, drink water and consider a pharmacist-recommended painkiller. For constipation, eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. For feeling sick or tummy pain, stick to simple meals. If any of these become troublesome, or if you experience any other symptoms you think are due to the tablets, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Are there any serious side-effects I should be particularly aware of with rosuvastatin?

While rare, there are some serious side-effects you should tell your doctor about straightaway. These include muscle cramps or pains (especially in your legs, if you also feel unwell or have a fever), shortness of breath or an unexplained cough (as it can rarely cause interstitial lung disease), or any allergic reactions like swelling around your mouth or face, or a skin rash.
