Travoprost reduces raised pressure in your eye.
Remember to use the eye drops every day.
The drops can alter the colour of your eyes over time, and cause your eyelashes to grow darker and thicker. Your doctor will discuss this with you.
At a glance
Travoprost eye drops are used to lower high pressure in the eye.
High eye pressure can lead to glaucoma and vision loss if untreated.
These drops work by increasing the drainage of fluid from your eye.
Use one drop once a day, usually in the evening.
Do not wear soft contact lenses with bottled drops, due to preservatives.
Common side-effects include eye redness, irritation, and changes in eye colour.
If you notice a rash, swelling, or itching around your eyes, stop using the drops and seek medical advice.

About travoprost eye drops
Type de médicament | Prostaglandin analogue |
Utilisé pour | To reduce raised pressure within your eye |
Aussi appelé | Travatan®, Visutrax® |
Disponible sous forme de | Eye drops in bottles and in single-dose units |
An increase in pressure within your eye can lead to damage to the optic nerve at the back of your eye. When this occurs it is called le glaucome. Glaucoma can lead to a loss of vision if it is not treated. If you have an increased pressure within your eye but without any damage to the optic nerve, this is called ocular hypertension. People with ocular hypertension have an increased risk of later developing glaucoma. Treatment with travoprost eye drops helps to reduce eye pressure in people with ocular hypertension, and to prevent further eye damage in people with open-angle glaucoma.
Travoprost eye drops work by increasing the drainage of fluid from inside your eye. This helps to lower the pressure within your eye.
Sometimes, more than one type of eye drop is needed to keep the pressure in the eye low. If this is the case for you, you may be asked to use two different eye drops, or you may be given drops which combine more than one type. Travoprost is available as a combination eye drop with another medicine which reduces eye pressure, called timolol (a beta-blocker), in a brand called DuoTrav®.
Before using travoprost eye drops
Retour au sommaireSome medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start using travoprost it is important that your doctor knows:
Si vous êtes enceinte ou si vous allaitez.
If you have had surgery on your eye to replace or remove the lens (such as cataract removal).
If you have had problems in the past with viral infections in your eye.
If you are taking or using any other medicines or eye drops. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines.

How to use travoprost eye drops
Hold the bottle (or unit) upside down near to your eye. Try not to touch your eye as you do this.
Apply enough pressure to the bottle to release one drop into your eye. Do not use more than one drop - using several drops does not improve your glaucoma but will increase the risk of side-effects.

Retour au sommaireBefore you start using the eye drops, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from the pack. It will give you more information about the eye drops and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from using them.
Use one drop in the eye (or eyes) affected once a day. Your doctor may recommend you use the drops in the evening.
Remember to use the drops every day. If you do forget, do not double up on the next day to make up for a missed dose.
If any of the eye drop solution runs on to your face, wipe it away as soon as you can with a clean tissue or hanky.
When first put in, eye drops can make your eyes water and may sometimes cause blurred vision. If this happens, it should quickly clear. Make sure you can see clearly again before you drive and before using tools or machines.
Do not wear soft contact lenses if you are using bottles of eye drops. This is because bottles contain preservatives which can sometimes affect soft contact lenses. You may wear soft contact lenses if you are using the single-dose units, as there is no preservative in these (but remember to take out your lenses to apply the drops and wait for at least 15 minutes before putting your lenses back in).

Can travoprost eye drops cause problems?
Retour au sommaireAlong with their useful effects, eye drops can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. The table below contains the most common ones associated with travoprost. You will find a full list in the manufacturer's information leaflet supplied with the drops. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice if any of the following continue or become troublesome.
Common travoprost eye drop side-effects | Que puis-je faire si je ressens cela ? |
Redness in your eye, eye irritation, pain or itching | Discuss this with your doctor if you are concerned |
Changes in the colour of the iris of your eyes, longer or thicker eyelashes, darker skin on your eyelids | Discuss these with your doctor. The changes occur over time and can be permanent |
Sensitivity to light | Wearing sunglasses may help |
Important : occasionally people can be allergic to eye drops, particularly if the eye drops contain a preservative. If you notice a rash around your eyes, or any swelling or itching, stop using the drops and contact a doctor or pharmacist for advice. Long-term use of preserved eye drops may lead to eye irritation and symptoms of dry eyes. If your eyes or eyelids become red or inflamed after using the drops, contact your doctor for advice.

Eye drops can be used for four weeks once the bottle has been opened. Even if there is still some solution remaining after this time, throw it away and use a new bottle. This will help to prevent the risk of eye infections.

What is the key difference between glaucoma and ocular hypertension?
Glaucoma occurs when increased pressure inside your eye leads to damage of the optic nerve, which can result in vision loss. Ocular hypertension means you have increased eye pressure but without any optic nerve damage. However, ocular hypertension increases your risk of developing glaucoma later.
How do travoprost eye drops actually help to reduce eye pressure?
Travoprost eye drops work by increasing the drainage of fluid from inside your eye. This process helps to lower the pressure within the eye, which is beneficial for both ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma.
Can I use travoprost eye drops if I've had cataract surgery?
It's important to inform your doctor if you have had eye surgery to replace or remove the lens, such as cataract removal, before you start using travoprost eye drops. Your doctor will need to take extra care or determine if this medicine is suitable for you.
What actions should I take if the eye drops make my vision blurry?
When eye drops are first put in, they can make your eyes water and may cause blurred vision. This effect should clear up quickly. It's important to make sure your vision is clear again before you drive or operate any tools or machines.
Why is it important to press on the side of my nose after applying the drops?
Gently pressing on the side of your nose where your eye meets it for a minute or two after applying the drops helps to prevent the solution from draining away. This keeps the medicine in your eye, allowing it to have the intended effect.
Are there any considerations for contact lens wearers when using these eye drops?
If you wear soft contact lenses, you should not use travoprost eye drops from a bottle because they contain preservatives that can affect soft lenses. However, you can use single-dose units as these do not contain preservatives. Remember to remove your lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.
What should I do if I notice changes in my eye colour or eyelashes?
Travoprost can cause changes such as altered iris colour, longer or thicker eyelashes, or darker skin on your eyelids. These changes occur over time and can be permanent. If you notice these effects and are concerned, you should discuss them with your doctor.
How long can I use a bottle of travoprost eye drops once it's been opened?
Once a bottle of travoprost eye drops has been opened, it can be used for four weeks. After this period, even if there is still solution remaining, you should throw it away and start a new bottle. This practice helps to prevent eye infections.
