Hydroxyzine belongs to a group of medicines known as sedating antihistaminiques. It is used to relieve itching caused by some skin conditions, such as nettle rash (urticaire).

How does hydroxyzine work?

Exposure to substances such as pollen, pet fur, house dust or insect bites can cause some people to produce an excess of a chemical called histamine.

This release of histamine can then cause a skin rash and/or itchiness. Because hydroxyzine blocks the effects of histamine, it helps relieve symptoms like these.

• Take hydroxyzine as your doctor tells you. Usually, take 1 dose at night, sometimes you may need extra doses during the day.

• You can take it with or without food. Take it with water if that helps.

• If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the normal time. Do not take 2 doses together.

• You usually only need it for a short time. Stop taking it when your symptoms get better.

• Hydroxyzine may make you feel sleepy. If it does, do not drive or use tools or machines.

• Do not drink alcohol, as it can make the sleepiness worse.

• Tell your doctor, nurse, or dentist you are taking hydroxyzine before any operation, treatment, or tests, especially allergy tests. You may need to stop it for a short time.

• Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight. Use sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher with UVA protection) and avoid sunbeds.
